TODAY: 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time: The Canaanite woman at first glance was rejected in her plea, but she was not downhearted.  She was not asking for herself and that is why she was persistent in her appeal.  She wants to save her child at any price, and fell at Jesus’ feet, hoping that He will not reject her.  But this time her faith and trust were placed in a greater temptation than the first time.  Jesus was silent at her first outcry, but this time He radically rejected her: “It is not right to take the food of children and throw it to the dogs.”   “CHILDREN” are the Jewish chosen people, and all other nations were considered ‘DOGS”.  The Gospel talks about “BREAD” - which applies to Jesus’ words, His works, and all His miracles.  He - Jesus, is needed to all as bread is.  First of all, He is destined for the Jews and then for others.  This is the purpose of His existence.  He wants to be bread to all; He does not want to be the bread that is thrown to the dogs.  The Canaanite woman did not ask for the same treatment as other sons and daughters of the Jewish nation.  She was happy to be treated as the dogs who are waiting for scraps to fall from the table of their masters.  She asked Jesus for some scraps of His goodness and to heal her daughter.  That is why she told Him: “Please Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.”   This answer shows the greatness of her faith and her humility.  To this unique, heroic, lively and humble faith, Jesus could not but do something.  Admired by her faith, Jesus said: “O woman, great is your faith!  Let it be done for you as you wish.”  And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour.

DANAS: 20.
