TODAY, 5th SUNDAY OF EASTER: The Lord very often compares His people with a “vineyard” in the Old Testament.  “Let me sing for my beloved a love song concerning His vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.  He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watch tower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes…” (Isaiah 5, 1-2).  “What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it?  ”And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard.  I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its walls, and it shall be trampled down.  I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and briers and thorns shall grow up.”   (Isaiah 5, 4-5).  Such is God’s poem of love for the vineyard.  The Jewish nation is no longer God’s vineyard.  The Jewish nation betrayed God’s expectations, did not bring up some fruit which the wine grower expected.  Now comes Jesus Christ, the true wine grower in whom and through whom a new God’s vineyard began…a new God’s people…The Church, which will serve God anew.  Jesus, as a new Israel, will bring overabundant fruits.  He, as a vine, will be pruned, cleared up, watered with His own Blood to serve as a basis for new branches: you and me which will be grafted on Him.  We are all these branches on that Vine which is Christ.  Jesus’ words: “I am the vine, you are the branches.  He who abides in Me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”  (John 15,5).

DANAS: 5. NEDJELJA PO USKRSU: Već u starom Savezu Gospodin rado uspoređuje svoj narod s «vinogradom».  «Moj je dragi imao vinograd, na brežuljku rodnome.  Okopa ga, iskrči kamenje, posadi ga lozom plemenitom.  Posred njega kulu podiže i u nj tijesak on metnu.  Nadaše se da će uroditi grožđem, a on izrodi vinjagu. . .»   (Iz 5, 1-2) . . . «Što još mogoh učiniti za svoj vinograd pa da nisam učinio? . . . Sad ću vam reći što ću učiniti od svog vinograda:  plod ću mu soriti da ga opustoše; zidinu razvaliti da ga izgaze.  U pustoš ću ga obratiti, ni obrezana ni okopana, nek u drač i trnje sav zaraste.»  (Ib 4-5).  Tako glasi Božja pjesma ljubavi o vinogradu.  Istom se poredbom kasnije služe proroci Hošea, Ezekijel i Jeremija.  Sam Isus Krist također preuzima istu poredbu te, kako to svjedoči Matej (21, 33) govori o vinogradarima ubojicama. Tko ostaje u meni i ja u njemu, rodi mnogo roda.  Jer bez mene ne možete ništa učiniti!»  (Iv 15, 5).

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: The words of Jesus in today's gospel, «Abide in me,» are appropriate on a day we honor mothers because of a special bond connecting mothers and their children, extending beyond birth and death.  They will always «abide» in each other.  It is a lasting presence.
