TODAY: 30th SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME: The Jewish teachers of the Law knew 248 regulations and 365 prohibitions that were in the Law.  Now the question was directed to Jesus: «Which commandment in the Lawq is the greatest?»  Jesus answered: «You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.  This is the greatest and the first commandment.  The second commandment is similar: «You shall love your neighbor as yourself.»  And Jesus added: «The entire Law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.»Did Jesus bring anything new or did He just repeat the Old Testament Law?  Every faithful Israelite used to pray three times a day and used these words: «Hear O Israel!  The Lord is our God, the Lord above!  Therefore, you shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.»  Jesus did not abolish these commandments, but he made them perfect by adding: «You shall love your neighbor as yourself» that is equal to the first commandment.  This is Jesus' great newness...no one can love God if he doesnot love his neighbor.  «He who has no love for the brother he has seen cannot love the God he has not seen.»  (1 John 4, 20-21).  The Pharisees didnot practice this newness.  They exclude from their hearts all impure tax collectors, those who were in service of the occupying force, lepers, sinners, adulterous people, those who would be working or healing anyone on Sabbaths.  One would not be allowed to go to homes of the pagans.  Jesus reminded His disciples that the time will come when anyone who puts you to death will claim to be serving God!

DANAS: 30. (Iv 16,2.)

INNOCENCE IS PRICELESS: One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Randy standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque.  It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side of it.  The six-year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly: «Good morning Randy.»  «Good morning Pastor,» he replied, still focused on the plaque.  «Pastor, what is this?»  The pastor said: «Well, son, it's a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.»  Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque.  Finally, little Randy's voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked: «Which service, the 8:30 a.m. or the 10:45 a.m.?»

AN  ELECTION  DAY  PRAYER  TO BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

O Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, at this most critical time, we entrust the United States of America to your loving care.  Most Holy Mother, we beg you to reclaim this land for the glory of your Son.  Overwhelmed with the burden of the sins of our nation, we cry to you from the depths of our hearts and seek refuge in your motherly protection.  Look down with mercy upon us and touch the hearts of our people.  Open our minds to the great worth of human life and to the responsibilities that accompany human freedom.  Free us from the falsehoods that lead to the evil of abortion and threaten the sanctity of family life.  Grant our country the wisdom to proclaim that God's law is the foundation on which this nation was founded, and that He alone is the True Source of our cherished rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  O Merciful Mother, give us the courage to reject the culture of death and the strength to build a new Culture of Life.

DECEASED:  Sister Barlamina, our Croatian Sister who was in Lackawanna for many years, died in Croatia.
