TODAY, 5th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: The miraculous catch of fish belongs to the miracle Jesus performed at the beginning of His public ministry.  The faith of His first followers was motivated by these extraordinary signs.  We might say this was a way of calling His disciples into His service --- calling them to follow Him so that they may continue His apostolate.  The most significant person is St. Peter in this episode.  Jesus said to him: Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch!”  (Lk 5, 4).  Jesus enters Peter’s boat.  Even though Peter admits that he is not worthy and sinful, Jesus awards his faith with an abundant catch of fish.  And furthermore, Jesus promises him: “From now on you will be catching men.”  The call to Jesus’ apostolate is God’s choosing --- it is a work of His grace.  What is needed to make such a decision to follow Christ is to experience Him and have an encounter with Him as did Jesus’ disciples at the episode of the miraculous catch of fish.

DANAS, 5.

SATURDAY, FEB. 10TH: Ninth Liturgical Feast of the Blessed Aloysius Stepinac.  February 10th was decreed by Pope John Paul ll as the Feast the beatification ceremony of Blesses Aloysius in Marija Bistrica, Croatia on October 3rd, 1998.  this date is also the anniversary of his saintly martyr’s death in Krasic, Croatia, on February 10th, 1960.

NEXT WEEKEND: Second collection will be for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: We can learn how to handle stress from today’s Gospel.  When pressured by the crowd, Jesus got into a boat and “went out a short distance and taught”.  Juggling parenting, scheduling, and work can be stressful.  Parents need space also.  A “short distance” is a good parenting tool.

INTERCESSION FOR LIFE: We pray to the Lord for young people who seek to fill emptiness with the passing pleasures of this world: that God might fill their hearts with a love beyond all imagining, and imbue their minds with a hunger for the truth.
