The Season of Advent
Reflection of the meaning of Christmas

Advent is an English version of a Latin word Adventus - “a coming”. It refers to the four-week period before Christmas during which we spiritually await the coming of Christ at Christmas.

The Church has given us these four weeks to prepare ourselves for the coming of the Son of God. He comes to us in grace each time we celebrate the Eucharist and pray. Only if we are united with Him in prayer we will recognize his presence

Advent is the time, which reminds us of the final coming of Christ in glory. This will be the time when He will come to judge the living and the dead and each one will receive what his deeds deserve. We have to prepare for His final coming and readyness to meet Him whenever He comes.

Finally, Advent is the time to reflect on the real meaning of Christmas. It is a time to look deep into our hearts and see if there is anything that would stand on the way to His coming.

In the Book of the Prophet Isaiah we read:
“A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the Lord! Make straight in the wasteland highway for our God! Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low; the rugged land shall be made a plain, and the rough country, a broad valley. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed.”

Vrijeme Adventa

U knjizi proroka Izaije smo procitali:
"A glas glasno iz: U pustinji Pripravite put Gospodinu!

Our Lady of Rosary
Meditation of the mysteries of Christ

The rosary is an old prayer tracing its roots to the twelfth century when the people who could not read and write would count their prayers on the string of beads.

During the 15th century the rosary developed into familiar prayer form, as we know it today. Dominicans were very influential in the growth, devotion and spread of this prayer.

The Blessed Mother urged everyone to pray the rosary during her apparitions at Fatima, Portugal. She was named "the Lady of the Rosary," she promised that the Rosary would help people reinforce their faith, convert sinners and bring
a peace to the world.

The feast of Our Lady of Rosary is celebrated on October 7th when all are invited to meditate upon the mysteries of Christ following the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary who was the mostly related to the incarnation, passion and glorious resurrection of the Son of God.

Gospa od Krunice
Meditacija posvecena Kristovim tajnama

Oktoberfest time of the year
Homemade food is always
pleasing to the palate.

It's that time of the year again. Changing leaves, abundant harvests of our local specialties of apples, peaches, tomatoes and much more.

Our thoughts start to turn to winter and what we'll have to do to prepare. Outdoor projects like planting, blacktopping the driveway and canning consume our thoughts. In addition to our own personal projects, it is also the time to gather with family and friends before the weather gets too harsh.

Traditionally at Our Lady of Bistrica, we have our Oktoberfest dinner, where the ladies of our church prepare a homemade dinner, Croatian style, which is always pleasing to the palate.

On Sunday October 12th, 2008 after the mass at 1:00 at the Cardinal Stepinac Auditorium, the ladies will be preparing a menu of stuffed peppers, chicken, potatoes, salad and apple strudel for dessert (of course refreshments also).

Bring some family members who haven’t come around for while for everyone to see. Please come and join us for food, meet your old friends and make new ones.

s obitelji i prijateljima prije nego vremenske prilike postanu previše oštre.

Naša župa Our Lady of Bistrica tradicionalno prireduje Oktoberfest zakusku, za koju domacice naše župe spremaju okrepljujuci hrvatski rucak, koji uvijek prija našem nepcu.

Molimo vas dodite
i pridružite nam se. Uživajmo u dobrom zalogaju
i ugodnom druženju sa starim i novim prijateljima.

Petition for Our Sisters
Our Sisters are leaving?

We are still trying our best to keep our dear sisters with us at Our Lady of Bistrica. They have been called back to Croatia by Mother General of their order and her council. We are praying and doing all that we can in the hope that she and her council will reconsider their decision.

The parish council wrote to them last Spring with an offer, which sadly, they have refused. Parish council started an initiative of signing the petition to keep sisters with us. Petition on their behalf is available for signing since Sunday August 3. The petition can be found at all times during the week in the church entryway. Mr. Frank Grgas, our parish council vice-president, is currently collecting signatures, he will be seeking signatures even at Saturday's evening Bingo at Cardinal Stepinac Hall until August 30!
Please, consider adding your name to the list.

We are also encouraging people to write to Mother General and her council to tell them what our sisters mean to us individually.
Time is of the essence, so please do not delay.

Peticija za Naše Sestre
Da li naše Sestre odlaze?

Još uvijek pokušavamo, kako najbolje znamo, zadržati naše drage sestre s nama u župi Our Lady of Bistrica.

Kolovoza. Peticiju možete potražiti tijekom citavog tjedna u predvorju naše crkve. Gospodin Frank Grgas, podpresjednik našeg vijeca, trenutno prikuplja potpise koje ce nastavljati skupljati i svake subote za vrijeme Binga u dvorani Kardinala Stepinca sve do 30. Kolovoza! Molimo Vas, trebamo i Vaš potpis na ovoj listi.

Takoder želimo ohrabriti naše župljane da osobno napišu pismo Casnoj Majci i njezinu vijecu te izraze koliko nam naše sestre znace.
Vrijeme je veomo važno, molimo nemojte odgadati.

A letter from Mother General
A letter from Mother General
of Sisters of Mercy

A few months ago, Parish council members sent an official letter to the Mother General of Sisters of Mercy, with the purpose of examining the decision to call our sisters back to Croatia, and asking their approval for our sisters to continue their mission in our parish. This letter was signed by all members of the Parish council on the behalf of our parishioners.
A response from Mother General was sent to Fr. Christopher’s address, and we have since learned that their decision has not changed. We would like to encourage our parishioners to write and to send a letter to Mother General in the interest of saving the sisters in our parish.
If you need any help with writing, sending your letters, or if you have any questions, please contact us at the address: Ourladyofbistrica@gmail.com

Pismo Vrhovne glavarice
Sestara Milosrdnica

The kind words
Note from our priest is a positive
model for motivation

We know what it takes to make something happen. Every event at our parish, was made possible by volunteers who are contributing to our community activities. Everyone who worked on preparation for any of our events knows - it isn’t easy. It’s much easier to forget that everything we were taking for granted, takes a careful planning, hours of preparations, and the most of all – the hard work.

Sometimes before, during or after some special functions we tend to be the great critics, taking a hard look at the things, and focusing on the details we didn’t like and enjoy. We would often have done something different (rarely better), but seldom we like and appreciate what we have, until (in some cases) we lose it. It’s easy to forget that someone worked, for days in advance, preparing our meals, building the tents, placing our tables and chairs. While we are having fun, our volunteers are still working in the kitchen, selling tickets, serving us drink and keeping us safe. We paid for our tickets do we owe them something? Well, it feels good to hear a positive comment, to recognize someone’s appreciation and gratitude for all that they are doing and have done.

Our new Bulletin is presenting a Father Chris’s message or Thank you note for everyone who worked hard to make our Annual picnic possible. This note from our priest is a positive model for motivation of the participants and volunteers, and inspiration for those who are going to help us in the creating our future events. We are publishing it here in its entirety:

“It took many hours to prepare for the picnic: setting up the property, putting up tents, tying up the meats for roasting, and then roasting the lamb, pork and chickens, baking strudel and nut rolls, making potato and macaroni salad, bread, working in the kitchen, working behind the bar, making the theme baskets and watching over the auction, souvenir booth, games, bounce house, bake sale, Bell Jar table, cleaning up after the picnic. May God bless all of the people who did all of that work. Thank you from the bottom of our heart. Fr. Chris.”

Ljubazne rijeci

Fr. Chris.”

Prayer for our Sisters

Next Tuesday's (April 8th) is our weekly Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament (from after the 7:30 AM Mass until 6:00 PM) and the Rosary and Benediction at 6:00 PM. Adoration will be dedicated for the intention of keeping our Sisters in our parish. We kindly ask our parishioners to join us in prayer to beg God for a special favor.

Our Croatian Sisters - the Sisters of Charity of
St. Vincent de Paul of Zagreb - have been called home to Croatia by the Mother General of their order. This news is a cause of great sadness for the all members of our Lady of Bistrica, as we have a love and attachment for each other. They are very important to us, not only for all the valuable and necessary services they selflessly provide, but also for their spiritual guidance and devotion to our parish members. They are providing a religious education, music and countless other works. Our dear nuns cook, clean and keep our altar and all our gardens absolutely beautiful.

The parish council is drafting a letter to be sent to the Mother General that will plead our case while being respectful of her authority in this matter. Father Chris and the church trustees and council will sign this letter on behalf of the entire parish. We are hoping for a miracle - we will pray!
